Reactions
Substitution
One or more atoms replace another atom or group of atoms in a molecule
Example:
CH4+Cl2=CH3Cl+HCl
Addition
One in which two parts of a molecule are added to an unsaturated molecule that increases the saturation
Elimination
One in which a simple molecule, such as water or ammonia, is formed from adjacent carbon atoms of a larger molecule
Example:
Ethanol makes ethene and water while in the presence of H2SO4
Esterification
A reaction which requires two reactants (usually an acid or an alcohol) that creates an ester in the product
Saponification
Hydrolysis of an ester to form an alcohol and a salt of a carboxylic acid
Condensation Polymerization
When two polymer combine which usually results in making an H20
Monomers must have two functional groups
Addition Polymerization
Addition reactions between two monomers
Contain a double bond
